This book was entertaining for me because I read most of the Big Nate books, and I know enough that Nate loves Cheez-Doodles, is messy, and doesnโt care that much about hygiene. His comics are all dirty and seem to be drawn in 10 minutes.
In this new book, Nate finally realizes that being too neat is not good. Let me tell you what happened before that. He asks Francis to ask Mrs. Godfrey to borrow a school camera so Nate can take photos in the P. S. 38 Yearbook. Nate receives a camera from Francis and then soon proceeds to lose it. However, Mrs. Godfrey still believes that Francis lost it because she gave it to him and gave him a week of detention when Francis nobly decided to take the punishment, a week of detention for his friend. (NOT) Francis was mad at Nate, who denied that he had lost it and that someone had taken it. In the heated argument, Nate blabs Francisโs most embarrassing secret, which is that Francisโs middle name is Butthurst.ย
Francis kept ignoring Nate and said he didnโt care if he came to the Trivia. Desperate to be friends with Francis again, he is reminded of the hurtful words Francis told him. โYouโre such a slob!โ He then goes to Teddyโs uncle with Teddy and Dee-dee. Being the famous hypnotist he was, he managed to hypnotize Nate into being neat without anyone noticing. After, they realize that Nate has turned neat. His grades change dramatically, and the teachers LOVE him. He even got an A++ from Mrs. Godfrey and gets a higher score than the know-it-all show-off Gina. (His arch-enemy)ย
He then hates being neat. He turned into a hall monitor, and he realized everything took so LOOOOOOONG when he was tidy. He wasted 30 minutes on his hair and another 30 minutes making sure that the panels for his comics were all perfect. He manages to know everything unperfect and, MOST importantly, refuses to eat Cheez-Doodles.ย
Dee-dee and Nate finally figure out who stole their camera. Randy Betancourt. Or so they thought. The suspicion raised when Dee-dee found out that they were giggling in a corner were some cards that were prohibited at P. S. 38.ย
During his hall monitor duty, he sees someone carrying a bag, surprisingly looking like the case for the lost camera. He chases after him, breaking the rules. He turns a corner, thenโฆ CRASH! He smashes into a table, dropping some paper on the floor. As soon as he was going to stand up and continue the hunt, he stopped, picked the paper up, and set it neatly on the table. Because of his neatness, he lost his only chance.
During lunch, he sees Randy beat up Francis, teasing him severely and calling him by his middle name. Furious, Nate jumps onto Randy and has a huge physical fight with him.
Somehow, he only gets a phone call from his dad from the principal. As he walks out the door, he sees Francis, and Francis is willing to talk to him. Nate tells Francis how neat he is, acknowledges he was hypnotized, and then shows his locker. Butโฆ Why is the camera there? They are both shocked. Suddenly, Nick Blonsey shows up, and Nate, Francis, and Teddy tease him about his horrible leadership during last year's Yearbook. He laughs and gloats about how stealing the camera was the best thing he ever did. Francis threatens to tell Mrs. Godfrey, but the moron yaps that they have no evidence until Dee-dee comes along and shows the recorded conversation on her phone.ย
The result?
With Nate, Francisโs team wins the Trivia, beating Gina and Randy.ย
Nate and Francis are best friends again.
They got the camera and excellent candids during the Trivia.ย
Nick gets suspended for 1 weekโฆ (Maybe a good thing?)
This book was one of the best comics I ever read in my life, and it showed me that there could be some drastic changes, even to people that seem like dumb morons that seem to have nothing to do that bully some people. Who knows? Maybe Randy could turn kind.ย
